There are many associations in Älvkarleby municipality, and you will have plenty of opportunities to practise your favourite leisure activities. Football and tennis, bandy and motor sports are some examples of sports with their own clubs and many members.
What is available in the immediate area
Skutskär’s centre has a good selection of services including banks and restaurants, supermarkets and pharmacies. You will also find several hairdressers, a sporting goods shop, shoe and clothes shops, a cinema and a fine library, all centrally located. If you like the outdoor life, there are good jogging and skiing trails, hiking routes and lovely spots for swimming.
Childcare and education opportunities
Municipal schools include several
preschools, day recreation centres and
comprehensive schools. There is also
special needs education and cultural education. Älvboda Friskola is a private alternative that receives pupils aged 6-16. If you want to pursue a higher education,
Gävle University College and the universities of
Stockholm are within commuting distance.
The tenants’ association organises a “language café” a few days a week, where people get together to practise their Swedish and have coffee.
Health and medical care
There is a medical care centre in Skutskär with a doctor’s surgery, district nurse, obstetric and paediatric consultation services.
National dental health care services and the Apotek group (pharmacies) are also centrally located.
Communications in and around Älvkarleby are good. The Upptåget train runs between Gävle in the north and Uppsala in the south, stopping at Skutskär, Älvkarleby and Marma. If you want to travel further, you can easily change to the Stockholm commuter train at Uppsala, reaching Arlanda in 80 minutes or Stockholm Central Station in about two hours.
