Jämtlands län

Jämtland county lies in the middle of Sweden and is one of the country's largest. The landscapes here are dominated by forests, waterways and mountains. There are 8 municipalities in the county, of which Östersund is the biggest. Tourism is one of the county's most important industries. The population and their activities are spread across the entire county, and the small city of Östersund has a university (Mittuniversitetet), shops, and airport and a city centre.

Winters are cold, with plenty of snow, and summers are warm and full of light. Jämtland is characterised by inward migration, and you will find people here from all over Sweden and the world. Tourism, the sought-after lifestyle and the wonderful people here attract thousands of people to move here every year.

Housing situation

The county can offer both urban living in the small city of Östersund and rural charm on a farm in the country. It is generally easier to find housing in Jämtland county than in the metropolitan regions of southern Sweden. Prices are high in Åre and Östersund, but housing is affordable in the rest of the county.

Business and employers

Tourism is a very important source of jobs in the county, with particularly good employment prospects in the mountain resorts and Östersund. The public sector is another major employer – including government agencies, the regional administration and municipalities. Jämtland also has a very large number of small businesses.

Schools and education

Education here includes everything from private preschools to universities. Compulsory and upper secondary schools are spread throughout the county, under private as well as public management. Mittuniversitetet (Mid Sweden University) offers many different types of programmes, and specialises in areas including winter sports, crisis management and psychology.

Medical care

Östersund has a big county hospital with advanced care technologies. Patients from the county's medical care centres are referred here. All municipalities have medical care centres. The standard of care is very high, and patients are referred to the regional hospital in Umeå for certain specialist treatments.

Culture and leisure

The county offers a good choice of recreational activities, catering especially well for lovers of the outdoors and sports. Winter sports of all kinds, running trails, football pitches and an active civic life all contribute to a wide range of activities throughout the year. Hunting and fishing are part of the Jämtland lifestyle. Östersund has a well-filled events calendar, with the Storsjöyran music festival one of the annual highlights.

Jämtland-Härjedalen's Sports Federation

Jämtland-Härjedalen's Sports Federation (Idrottsförbund) can offer support and help in coordinating resources in the form of money, knowledge and contacts. Physical activity is at the core. Movement stimulates well-being and health, physically as well as mentally. Sports can be an important part of the everyday lives of refugees and new arrivals as well as people with residence permits. Sports can be a  significant part of their health and well-being. Sports can be a place to do what you know or are good at, and a place to try something new. There are opportunities here for everyone to do sports - opportunities that may not have existed before due to culture, availability or time. Via district organisations, sports can offer support to clubs so they can open up their activities or expand them so that more people can participate and feel well, spontaneously and as a first step towards membership. More and more people are turning to sports, and health and well-being are increasing.

NBV - the temperance movement's adult education activities

NBV - Nykterhetens bildningsverksamhet is Sweden's oldest adult educational association, with 120 years' experience of adult education. NBV works with issues concerning alcohol and other drugs, public health and integration. NBV is present in all parts of Sweden and arranges study circles, courses, lectures and cultural events. Among NBV's activities are international cafés and language training at a few locations in Jämtland.

Save the Children

Save the Children's (Rädda Barnen) task in the county is to work for children's rights at the county and county council levels, mainly through opinion forming and advocacy. The aim of its activities is to improve children's situation in the long term. Work is carried out in close collaboration with members, local organisations and international bodies, and is based on people's own will to influence and change their circumstances. Rädda Barnen also works towards giving children and young people greater influence over their lives, and to have them participate more in everything we do. Rädda Barnen has local branches in most of the county's municipalities. Activities include charity shops, discussion groups for young people, and homework help.

Studieförbundet Vuxenskolan

Studieförbundet Vuxenskolan is based on the idea of giving people opportunities to develop by offering them creative venues to meet in. These include study circles, cultural events, lectures and other educational activities.

Studiefrämjandet arranges study circles in Swedish for asylum seekers.

The Red Cross

The Swedish Red Cross works for the fulfilment of human rights. Where there are needs and deficiencies in society, it tries to influence politicians and authorities e g to make changes to legislation so that migrants' rights are upheld. The founding principles of the Red Cross movement are humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntarism, unity and universality. The movement has no religious or political affiliation and never takes sides for or against any of the parties in wars or conflicts, standing only and always on the side of the individuals who become victims of them.

The Swedish Red Cross has a variety of engagements, including with emergency preparedness, support for refugees and asylum seekers, health care for undocumented people and victims of torture, courses in first aid and international law, and social work. The Red Cross is present in all the county's municipalities with such activities as charity shops (Mötesplats Kupan), first aid groups, sewing groups, language training, telephone helplines, family reunification and prison visits.
