The housing environments in Jönköping county range from the city pulse via picturesque villages to the peace of the countryside. The short distances make it easy to combine work and leisure. The majority of the county's municipalities state that their housing market is balanced, however it might be slightly more difficult to find housing in the population centres. Because of this, lots of flats are being built in the county.
Business and employers
The county is characterised by manufacturing industry, agriculture and forestry as well as a growing service sector. The largest employers in the county are Jönköping municipality, with around 11,000 employees, followed by the county council, with 10,000 employees. The largest private employers are Husqvarna AB, SAPA and Fläkt Woods. The county has many small and medium-sized companies who are sub-contractors to companies both nationally and internationally. A large proportion of the country's wooden house manufacturing is also located here.
Schools and education
Jönköping university is run in the form of a foundation and has four legs: the International Business School, School of Medicine, School of Engineering and the School of Learning and Communication. Around 10,000 students study at the university, of which 1,500 are international. Through the university's international contacts, there is a considerable number of exchange students.
There are three hospitals in the county, Länssjukhuset Ryhov in Jönköping, Höglandssjukhuset and Värnamo sjukhus. All offer a complete range of services, but in some cases specialist competency has been centralised. 31 of the county's medical centres are operated by the county council, while others are run privately. Ryhov has 20 clinics and 500 beds, while the other two hospitals are slightly smaller.
Culture and leisure
The county offers a broad range of cultural and leisure activities. Within the cultural sector, there is everything form the culture house Spira to the municipal culture schools. There are active amateur dramatics in several places. One attraction that is grown ever stronger is the art gallery Vandalorum in Värnamo. Leisure activities are dominated by a broad range of associations, within sports, but also other activities run on a not-for-profit basis. The county also has the national park Stora Mosse with a nature room.
Cultural and leisure activities are important tools in the integration work.
Associations and organisations – civil society
We have an unusually broad and varied range of associations. Sport in particular unites people, both as participants and as spectators. When HV71 play at home in Jönköping, Kinnarps Arena is visited by ice hockey enthusiasts from all over Sweden. The speedway races in Vetlanda and the trotting at Vaggeryd are two other spectator magnets. Churches and religious associations also have a prominent role in the county, and in several municipalities there are activities and meeting places to ensure established and newly arrived persons can meet.
