Köping municipality with just over 25,000 inhabitants is a natural centre in the region of the western part of the Lake Mälaren valley. Manufacturing is the most important industry, and the industrial tradition is continuing and developing. Sweden’s second largest lake harbour is in Köping. Through the hospital, the county council is a large employer, as is Köping municipality. Commuting is facilitated through good train and road connections. Köping is surrounded by many fine areas of nature. The harbour, the shops, the river walk and the turn-of-the-century houses around Stora Torget give character to the town.

What is available in the immediate area

The employment service, tax office, social insurance office and pension authority have offices in the same building at Västra Långgatan 6 in Köping. There is a library where you can borrow books and newspapers in various languages and get help with school homework. Apart from the shops in the centre of Köping, there is also a small shopping centre in conjunction with the motorway. Larger shopping centres are available in Västerås, Eskilstuna and Örebro.

Comprehensive and upper secondary schools

 Köping municipality has municipal comprehensive schools. Most of them also have an after-school club and several of the schools are profiled, such as for sports or music.

Education opportunities


Adult education in Köping is gathered at Kompetenscenter. This offers: guidance and information, adult education at comprehensive and upper secondary level, Komvux, Lärvux, Swedish for Immigrants (SfI) and remote access university education.

Korta Vägen-SFI (“Shortcut SfI”) is offered in conjunction with Folkhögskolan. In 2015, Köping begins to offer SFA, language teaching for persons with an academic degree in medicine. SFA-medicin is intensive, professionally based language teaching for persons who have a non-European academic degree in a medical profession. This includes Swedish in combination with courses aimed at work within health and medical care.

There is a small hospital in Köping with four wards. The emphasis is on acute internal medicine. There are also three medical centres in Köping and one in Kolsva. The delivery suite is in Västerås.

Köping has an active business sector with more than 1,300 companies. Many companies only have one employee, but there is also a strong industrial tradition, with companies such as GKN Driveline, Volvo Powertrain, Sandvik, Yara, Tibnor, Leax Group and Hästens Sängar.
