Orsa is a fairly small municipality, with just under 7,000 inhabitants. In area terms, it is fairly large. In the north, there are large forests and wilderness, at the southern end there is the population centre, with small industries and farms.



Many people in Orsa live in single-family houses and on farms. There are also blocks of flats. There is one housing facility for refugee children and young persons arriving alone. There is one municipal housing company, Orsabostäder, and several private landlords. If you are looking for a house, tenant-owner's flat or building plot, you should contact an estate agent.

Language groups in the locality

A large number of language groups are represented in Orsa, a small municipality. People of different ethnic origins live here together. Apart from Swedish and English, which are spoken by most inhabitants, there are many persons with a different mother tongue. This is because the municipality has been receiving refugees for many years. Somali, Arabic, Swahili, Thai, Philipino, English, French, Serbian, Croatian, Hungarian, Persian, Sri Lankan, Tigrinya, Spanish, Turkish, Kurdish and Polish are some of the languages represented.

Associations and organisations

There are well-stocked food stores, traditional market trading, restaurants and a café. Orsa has a lively and varied range of associations. You can find all active associations in the municipality's association register. The municipality has around 140 associations within leisure, culture and religion. There are sports and exercise facilities throughout the municipality. There are also walking paths in beautiful natural surroundings.

The municipality has a famous, rich and varied range of music, which engages young and old. The recording of the television programme "Moraeus med mera" takes place at the camp site. The municipality is the home of the folk music group "Orsa spelmän", and a few years ago a local choir won the television competition "Körslaget". On Wednesdays during July every year, the street music festival "Orsayran" takes places in the streets and squares of the town. Art and culture are prominent in the locality. There is an international association, and the Church of Sweden, Mission Church, Pentecostal Church and Orsa Baptist congregation.

What is available in the immediate area

There is a library, employment service and social services office in the main population centre. ICA, Coop and Willys are the three food shops. Skattungsbyn (around 15 km from the centre) has a food shop and more. Furniture, household goods and clothes can be bought from the second-hand shop in the centre.

Orsa is located around 20 minutes by car from Mora, where there is a tax office and social insurance office. In Mora Noret there are some larger department stores selling furniture and household goods, among other things.

Comprehensive and upper secondary schools

Orsa has five nursery schools run by the municipality, divided up into 14 units. Options are two municipal family day nurseries and one independent nursery schools. The municipality's nursery schools are in pretty locations and close to nature, and most have access to forest or have beautiful views.

Education opportunities

At Orsa Lärcentrum, there are opportunities for adults to study. It offers courses in reading and writing, Swedish for Immigrants, comprehensive schooling for adults and special education for adults, as well as upper secondary schooling for adults at a distance with a guide. Scandianvian College of Travel & Tourism (SCoTT) in Orsa is an educational centre that offers broad tourism programmes, focusing on skiing, tourism and health. Mora has a folk high school and Siljansutbildarna, where you can study at further education level at a distance.

Health and medical care

Orsa has a medical centre that offers help with medical advice, doctor's clinic, nurse's clinic, lifestyle clinic, counselling clinic, ante-natal clinic, children and young persons' clinic, rehabilitation, refugee health, emergency room, podiatrist clinic and sample taking. Mora hospital has a number of specialist clinics and offers emergency care to people living in and visiting northern and western Dalarna. The other hospital offering emergency care is in Falun.

Interpreter assistance

If you have a first language other than Swedish, you are entitled to an interpreter if you consider it necessary for all contacts with the municipality or other public authorities. Interpreter services are offered in a large number of languages. For establishment refugees, interpreter services can also be offered via Tolkförmedlingen in Borlänge. If you need interpreter assistance, please contact the refugee coordinator.

Public transport

Orsa has a train station on Inlandsbanan, which operates the route Mora-Östersund-Mora. The nearest two railway stations operated by SJ and Tåg i Bergslagen are in central Mora. You can travel there by bus operated by Dalatrafik.

Work and entrepreneurship

Orsa's business sphere consists mainly of small companies, but there are also a couple of relatively large entrepreneurs. The visitor industry is increasing in importance, and Grönklittsgruppen, located in Orsa, is our motor in this development.

Many people living in Orsa commute every day to Mora, Älvdalen, Rättvik and other nearby places.
