Södermanlands län

Södermanland is one of Sweden's 21 counties. The county lies south of Stockholm, north of Östergötland and borders the Baltic Sea to the east. There are approximately 280,000 residents of Södermanland and the largest town (municipality) is Eskilstuna which has just over 100,000 residents. There are good opportunities for commuting using public transport in Södermanland and there is an airport, Skavsta, outside Nyköping.


Housing situation

You can rent or buy your accommodation. If you rent accommodation, you pay rent to the landlord (owner). If you want to rent accommodation, it is important that join the queue for accommodation as quickly as possible. There are many people who want to rent accommodation and it can be difficult to find vacant properties.

The municipality's website generally contains information and contact details for landlords in the municipality. You can also find accommodation to buy or rent in advertisements, for example on the internet. At the Tenants' Association you can get information and help if you are going to rent accommodation.

Business and employers

The largest employers in the county are within the public sector. The public sector are municipalities, the county council and various governmental bodies. The largest municipalities - Eskilstuna, Nyköping and Katrineholm – have the most jobs. The county council, which is responsible for healthcare, also employs many people.

The largest private employers are industrial companies. There are also large companies working in the food, textile and retail industries. There is also Samhall Aktiebolag which provides many different types of jobs and work training. You can see a list of the largest employers in regional facts.

Schools and education

Children up to the age of 16 years attend comprehensive school and upper secondary school after that where they choose the subjects for their education. Information about schools can be found in our municipality. The education at comprehensive schools and upper secondary schools is free in Sweden.

If you are an adult and wish to study, there are numerous opportunities. The municipality arranges adult education and there are also folk high schools and vocational colleges. In Södermanland there is a high school, Mälardalen High School in Eskilstuna, while it is easy to commute to university in Linköping-Norrköping for example, or Stockholm.

Medical care

Everyone is entitled to healthcare in Södermanland. This also applies to asylum seekers. If you need emergency medical care if it's very urgent, you should ring the emergency number 112.

If it is not urgent, you should go to a welfare centre. Doctors and nurses work at welfare centres. If you need more specialised care, the welfare centre will assist you in getting to the right hospital. Your nearest welfare centre can be found on the county council's website.

There are three hospitals in Södermanland. These are situated in Eskilstuna, Nyköping and Katrineholm. They provide specialist units and emergency care. You can also consult a care guide by calling 1177 or by looking at the care guide's website. At the care guide you can get answers to your questions and advice regarding sickness and health.

Culture and leisure

Sweden has an active association life. Associations are organisations which are run by their members. These include sports clubs, cultural associations and work associations. There are also many associations where you can meet people from different parts of the world. Some of the associations can be found via the Immigrant Institute .

All municipalities have free libraries and they often act as meeting points for local culture. Here you can borrow books, CDs and films, read newspapers in many languages and use computers with an internet connection. The libraries often have information about the community. Some arrange activities such as language cafés where you can meet and practise your Swedish. There are also refugee guides and language friends in Eskilstuna, Nyköping, Strängnäs and Katrineholm.

If you want to know about what is happening in Södermanland or one of the municipalities, it is a good idea to read the local newspapers. Most local newspapers have online editions: Eskilstuna-Kuriren, Södermanlands Nyheter, Katrineholmskuriren, Folket and Tidningen Sörmlandsbygden. There is also local radio news via P4 Södermanland and local TV news on both SVT and TV4.

The Red Cross in Nyköping

In collaboration with the library, the Red Cross arranges an open language café every week at Nyköping City Library.

Vingåker växer tillsammans

​Vingåker växer tillsammans (Growing Vingåker Together) is a collaboration between the Red Cross and the Church of Sweden in Vingåker. They run Mötesplatsen, to which asylum seekers and other new arrivals can turn for support on asylum cases, forms, counselling and contacts.

Vingåkers IF
Vingåkers IF is a football association for children and young people, and also a women's and a men's team. The association organises the Cityhallen Cup football cup, Vingåker's spring market and its August bazaar.
