The population of Stockholm has been growing quickly over the last few years, and the housing shortage is a fact in all municipalities of the county. Housing construction has increased, but not sufficiently, which has meant that overcrowded housing is more common in Stockholm county than in any other region in Sweden. The housing shortage has resulted in rapid price increases for single-family houses and tenant-owner flats, and an increasing queue for rented flats from the countywide
municipal housing agency.
Business and employers
The city of Stockholm is the largest employer in the region, with around 55,000 employees. The telecoms company Ericsson is the largest private employer, with just over 10,000 employees. Forecasts show that there will be great demand for labour with upper secondary or university qualifications over the next few years, while the demand for labour with only comprehensive qualifications will fall.
Schools and education
With its 17 universities and colleges, Stockholm county is deemed to be the most knowledge-intensive region of the world outside the USA. The Karolinska Institute, Stockholm University and the Royal Institute of Technology have an international reputation, with high rankings on various ranking lists the world over.
Stockholm county council is responsible for ensuring the county's inhabitants get the health and medical care and dental care they need. The activities cover everything from care and health-promoting work to research and development.
Culture and leisure
With the metropolis of Stockholm at the centre of the region, the range of cultural activities in Stockholm county is very good – with museums, theatres, music, dance and other stage arts. With Sweden's long history of popular movements and associations, there are many opportunities for sporting and leisure activities.
