Vänersborg has 27 municipal preschools and 5 independent preschools. The comprehensive schools have after-school recreation centres. At the
Sirius family centre there is also an open preschool.

Around 3,500 pupils attend the 17 comprehensive schools. There are also two independent schools:
Frida School and Vänersnäs Montessori school. For pupils who are deaf or have impaired hearing, there is the state-run Väner School.
