Information about Sweden – a portal for new arrivals

If you have any questions about how something in Sweden works, or how to apply for asylum, you must ask the authority in charge of those matters. cannot process e-mails in any language other than Swedish or English.

Under ’Society’, you can find civic orientation in simple Swedish. The book ‘About Sweden’ can be downloaded as a PDF document. You can download the whole book, or choose individual chapters.

How do I use the portal?

In order to get a general idea of the information available at the portal, you can click on the different categories and read more on the pages there. The categories are Community, Work & Education, Care & Health, Children & Young People, Society and Learn Swedish. If you are looking for more information about Sweden when it comes to any of these areas, just click on the category and see if you can find what you need.

You can click on the links that look interesting. This may lead you to another website, such as the Migration Board or 1177 Vårdguiden, the health services information. If the site is not available in the language you chose in the portal, it will show you the Swedish version. All links have a text that pops up when you hover over it.

To choose a language, click on the arrow in the box in the top right corner (top left if you have chosen Arabic) and choose a language. How to choose a different language.

You can also use the search function to look for information or words in the portal.

Information about Sweden works with Talande Webb (Browsealoud). Browsealoud does not work with all languages and you need to download a free programme to use Browsealoud. You do this by clicking on the link on the start page.

What information can I find?

This page gives you general information about Swedish society and how it is structured. You can read more about how Sweden is governed and how you can affect it, you can find information about the Swedish social security system and its financial aids and how the Swedish health and medical services function. There is a step-by-step guide to the process from asylum to work as well as a list of terms. You will find more information under each category. The portal also has contributor material for the civic orientation book About Sweden.


This is where you will find quick links to different pages in the portal, but also to other websites. The start page contains the links we think are the most useful for you when you have just arrived in Sweden.

There is also a link that takes you to a page with all of our funders and partners.


In this category, you can get more information on the Swedish population and different forms of housing, but also about the rules that we all have to follow. These may be rules for how to apply for housing or just general rules of conduct, rules that apply if you are evicted from your apartment, but also how to give notice of a new address.

There are a couple of pages relating to culture and leisure in Sweden, with links to different organisations.

Work & Education

In this category you will find more information about how to look for work or start your own business. You can read more about which education possibilities are available to you and have your professional skills evaluated. You can also gain knowledge of Swedish for Immigrants and the laws that apply to the Swedish labour market.

Care & Health

Children & Young People

In this category you will find information about children’s rights, what the Swedish school system looks like, but also information for you who have come to Sweden without your parents.

You will also find a link to BRIS (Children’s Right in Society) where both children and adults can turn for help.


This is where you can find out more about Swedish society. Under ‘Civic Orientation’ you will find material for people participating in this kind of orientation. You can read the information online or download the whole book as a PDF document. You can also choose to only download the chapters you are interested in.

Learn Swedish

Learn Swedish at your own pace! Here you can find lots of different learning aids and tools where you can practise Swedish either on your own or with others.

Difficulties with technology!

If you are not accustomed to using a computer and the internet it might be difficult to find your way around it sometimes. There are other websites that can help you practice your internet and computer skills. A good example is the website e-medborgaren.
