Notify the Swedish Tax Agency of your move to Sweden and get a personal identity number
Last updated: 2/6-2025
If you have moved to Sweden and been granted a residence permit, in most cases you must be registered in the Swedish Population Register. The Swedish Population Register is a list of everyone registered as a resident of Sweden. Once registered, you will be issued with a personal identity number. The decision on whether you can register in the Population Register rests with the Swedish Tax Agency.
Notify the Swedish Tax Agency of your move and book an appointment for an identity check
In most cases, if you plan to live here for at least one year you must be registered in the Swedish Population Register. To be registered, you must notify the Swedish Tax Agency that you have moved to Sweden. You can do so using the Swedish Tax Agency’s e-service Moving to Sweden (”Flytta till Sverige”). The service is free of charge.
The e-service is available in Swedish, English and Ukrainian. You can also visit a service centre if you need assistance to use the service.
Each member of your family who moves to Sweden must submit a separate notification. This includes children.
You and any family members who have moved with you must then book an appointment for an identity check at a service centre. When you visit the service centre, you must present your identity documents and residence permit card.
The Swedish Tax Agency has produced a video about the Swedish Population Register. The video is available in a number of languages.
When you are registered in the Swedish Population Register you will be issued with a personal identity number
Once the Swedish Tax Agency has registered you in the Swedish Population Register, you will be issued with a personal identity number. A letter containing your personal identity number will be sent to your registered address.
You need a personal identity number to, for example:
- apply for an ID card;
- obtain e-ID, such as BankID;
- participate in the Swedish Public Employment Service’s introduction programme;
apply for introduction benefit from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (“Försäkringskassan”); or - open a bank account.
