The municipality has five population centres – Strömsund, Hammerdal, Backe, Hoting and Gäddede. In these centres, there are food shops, cafés, restaurants, pharmacies, banks, clothes shops and some smaller retailers. There are also libraries and flea markets. The centres also have sports halls, indoor swimming pools and ice rinks.
Childcare
Strömsund municipality offers a broad range of preschool activiites. There are several preschools, most of them municipal, but there is also one parent cooperative in Hallviken just south of Strömsund, and one independent preschool in Ulriksfors, five km from Strömsund. Strömsund also has child minders.

Strömsund has a family centre, an open operation that offers parents and children to meet and carry out joint activities. There is a nursery school teacher who plans the activities. The ante-natal clinic and child healthcare clinic are open, there are various courses on offer as well as baby massage. The family centre is also visited by a dental hygienist and child librarian.
Strömsund parish offers "Kyrkis", an open activity for children and parents. This is offered in several places in the municipality, in Hoting and Kyrktåsjö among other places.
Compulsory schools and upper secondary schools
The municipality covers a large area, and there are seven headmasterships with nine comprehensive schools. The municipality's only upper secondary school is in Strömsund, and offers a number of different upper secondary programmes as well as Komvux adult education. The school works closely with business and is a certified Health and Medical Care college and Technology college. You can also get a upper secondary economist qualification here. Strömsund also has Skyttegymnasiet, a national sports upper secondary programme.
There are municipal comprehensive schools in Hammerdal, Strömsund, Jormvattnet, Gäddede, Hoting, Kyrktåsjö and Backe.

Health and medical care
There are medical centres run by the region in Strömsund, Gäddede and Backe, with doctors, maternity care (MVC) and child health care (BVC) centres. There is an emergency and accident ward in Strömsund.

Car
It is easy to travel by car to Strömsund. Strömsund is located on the E45, 100 km north of Östersund. The journey takes around one and a half hours.
From Stockholm, it takes around eight hours to drive the 600 km distance to Strömsund.
Air
Åre/Östersund airport is one and a half hours by car from Strömsund. There are daily departures to and from Stockholm and the flight takes one hour.
The airports in Östersund and Röros in Norway are also used for charter flights. There are also airports in Kramfors and Vilhelmina, which is around 150 km from Strömsund.
Train
The train station is in Östersund, with connecting buses to Strömsund. In the summer, there are also trains on Inlandsbanan.
Bus
There are well developed bus connections between the population centre Strömsund and Östersund and Umeå.
