Jönköping county is the sixth largest in the country in terms of population. The county, which has thirteen municipalities, has just over 342,000 inhabitants. One third of these live in Jönköping municipality Ten of the county's municipalities have an increasing population. Jönköping county is strategically located in the country, and has developed into a logistics centre for northern Europe.

Housing situation

The housing environments in Jönköping county range from the city pulse via picturesque villages to the peace of the countryside. The short distances make it easy to combine work and leisure. The majority of the county's municipalities state that their housing market is balanced, however it might be slightly more difficult to find housing in the population centres. Because of this, lots of flats are being built in the county.

Business and employers

The county is characterised by its manufacturing industry, its farms and forests, and by a growing service sector. The biggest employer in the county is Jönköping municipality with around 11,000 employees, followed by the region with around 10,000. The biggest private employers are Husqvarna AB, SAPA and Fläkt Woods. The county also has many small and medium-sized companies which are subcontractors of bigger national and international companies. Much of Sweden's manufacturing of prefabricated timber houses takes place here.

Associations and organisations – civil society

We have an unusually broad and varied range of associations. Sport in particular unites people, both as participants and as spectators. When HV71 play at home in Jönköping, Kinnarps Arena is visited by ice hockey enthusiasts from all over Sweden. The speedway races in Vetlanda and the trotting at Vaggeryd are two other spectator magnets. Churches and religious associations also have a prominent role in the county, and in several municipalities there are activities and meeting places to ensure established and newly arrived persons can meet.

Schools and education

Jönköping university is run in the form of a foundation and has four legs: the International Business School, School of Medicine, School of Engineering and the School of Learning and Communication. Around 10,000 students study at the university, of which 1,500 are international. Through the university's international contacts, there is a considerable number of exchange students.

Medical care

The county has three hospitals, the Ryhov County Hospital in Jönköping, the Högland Hospital and Värnamo Sjukhus. All provide comprehensive care, but in some cases specialities have been centralised. 31 of the county's medical care centres are run by the region and the rest are privately run. Ryhov has 20 clinics and 500 beds, while the other two hospitals are slightly smaller.

Culture and leisure

The county offers a broad range of cultural and leisure activities. Within the cultural sector, there is everything form the culture house Spira to the municipal culture schools. There are active amateur dramatics in several places. One attraction that is grown ever stronger is the art gallery Vandalorum in Värnamo. Leisure activities are dominated by a broad range of associations, within sports, but also other activities run on a not-for-profit basis. The county also has the national park Stora Mosse with a nature room.
