Ystad is a town characterised by its medieval centre, which offers museums and historical buildings as well as a rapidly growing film production industry.

The wider area can boast sandy beaches that extend for tens of kilometres, lovely nature areas and charming fishing villages, all coupled with a rare quality based on living space, development and faith in the future.

Communications are another strong point, with direct trains to Malmö/Kastrup/Copenhagen and a port serving as an international communications hub.

Ystad's religious communities include the Church of Sweden – Ystad congregation, Sankt Nikolai – the Catholic congregation in Ystad, the Smyrna congregation in Ystad, the Congregation of Jehova's Witnesses and the Salvation Army.

There are many shops in the centre of Ystad, and hypermarkets are found on the outskirts of the town. There is also a fine library in Ystad.

Services such as the employment agency, social welfare office, the social insurance agency and the tax agency are of course available.

Childcare

Ystad has both municipal preschools and independent preschools. Pupils in year 1-5 can spend time in a day recreation centre before and after school. For young people in year 4 and up there is Ungdomens hus, with several different places where they can get together.

The arts school offers activities for anyone who wants to play a musical instrument, sing, act, draw or write.

Compulsory schools and upper secondary schools

The municipality provides comprehensive schools for pupils up to year 9. On the municipality's website you can find more about comprehensive schools and also the opportunities for upper secondary education.

Education opportunities

Forum Ystad has municipal adult education, Swedish for immigrants, special needs adult education and a dyslexia centre. There are also premises and equipment for distance learning programmes at university colleges and universities. Study and occupational guidance is available.

Health and medical care

Ystad has the county council's medical care centre as well as the private Nova Clinic. For emergencies or accidents, go to Akutmottagningen. Obstetrics is available at Barnmorskemottagningen and at the Nova Clinic. The county council's Barnavårdscentral and Barnens hus at the Nova Clinic offer paediatric care. Dental care is available at Folktandvården or from several private dentists, e.g. at the Nova Clinic and Ystad Tand & Implantcenter AB.

Public transport

Trains to Malmö/Lund depart every 30 minutes, and trains from Malmö to Copenhagen depart every 20 minutes.

Trains to Simrishamn depart every hour. Timetables are available from Skånetrafiken.

Ferry to Bornholm and Poland.
