Södermanland is one of Sweden's 21 counties. The county lies south of Stockholm, north of Östergötland and borders the Baltic Sea to the east. There are approximately 280,000 residents of Södermanland and the largest town (municipality) is Eskilstuna which has just over 100,000 residents. There are good opportunities for commuting using public transport in Södermanland and there is an airport, Skavsta, outside Nyköping.

Housing situation

You can rent or buy your accommodation. If you rent accommodation, you pay rent to the landlord (owner). Business and employers

The biggest employers in the county are in the public sector. This includes municipalities, the region and various government agencies. The biggest municipalities – Eskilstuna, Nyköping and Katrineholm – have the largest numbers of jobs. The region, which is responsible for medical care, also employs many people.

Schools and education

If you are an adult and wish to study, there are numerous opportunities. The municipality arranges adult education and there are also folk high schools and vocational colleges. In Södermanland there is a high school, Mälardalen High School in Eskilstuna, while it is easy to commute to university in Linköping-Norrköping for example, or Stockholm.

Medical care

Everyone is entitled to healthcare in Södermanland. This also applies to asylum seekers. If you need emergency medical care if it's very urgent, you should ring the emergency number 112.

There are three hospitals in Södermanland. These are situated in Eskilstuna, Nyköping and Katrineholm. They provide specialist units and emergency care. Culture and leisure

Sweden has an active association life. Associations are organisations which are run by their members. These include sports clubs, cultural associations and work associations. There are also many associations where you can meet people from different parts of the world. Some of the associations can be found via the Immigrant Institute.

All municipalities have free libraries and they often act as meeting points for local culture. Here you can borrow books, CDs and films, read newspapers in many languages and use computers with an internet connection. The libraries often have information about the community. Some arrange activities such as language cafés where you can meet and practise your Swedish. There are also refugee guides and language friends in Eskilstuna, Nyköping, Strängnäs and Katrineholm.
