What is available in the immediate area

There is much to experience and do in Eskilstuna, and the range on offer of culture, entertainment and recreation is large. Some few examples of this offering:

A river runs through Eskilstuna. Not a thin little ditch, but a wide, deep and pretty river that takes up space and provides character. In Eskilstuna we have very fine parks and leafy green spaces, which play an unsurpassed role as a meeting place for people of all ages. They function as a space for getting together, for individual rest and recreation, and also for play and games. They can also be a place you visit on your way to and from work.

One of our major attractions is Parken Zoo. Our zoo houses rare and exciting species from around the world. Most are part of vital projects for preserving the species. Sumatra tiger, Amur leopard and Asian lion are some examples of our fascinating big cats. In the Amazoonas tropical house, you step straight into the jungle and have to step carefully between tortoises and monkeys. In the successful Little Zoo, where many of the animals walk about freely, you can have close contact with our tame animals. In Nöjesparken, the amusement park, wonderful rides await, many adapted for smaller children. On our stages, a whole range of well-loved artists make guest appearances. At the heated Parken pools, you can throw yourself into the pools or take a well-deserved break in the sun. Just next is Parken Zoo Camping and chalets – "Stay at the Zoo" here, and you will experience even more!

Eskilstuna has libraries and several meeting places. At the City Library, you can borrow books, audio books, language courses, music, TV games and films. You can also use the other services provided free of charge by the library, such as daily newspapers, magazines, encyclopaedias, Internet, computers for word processing and microfiche readers. If you want a cup of coffee, you can have one in Carina's café, which has lots of tasty things on offer.

If you want to partake of an even broader offering of culture and entertainment, Stockholm, Norrköping, Linköping, Västerås and Örebro are within easy reach.

Childcare

92 % of all children in Eskilstuna attend nursery school. There are more than 50 nursery schools in the municipality. Two of these are open 24 hours a day. We are proud that the parents of just over 5,000 children choose the municipal nursery schools. We are also proud to be able to offer nursery schools that parents and children are happy with.

Compulsory schools and upper secondary schools

Eskilstuna has 26 municipal comprehensive schools, teaching all the way from pre-school classes of six year olds up to year 9. All comprehensive schools with pre-school classes up to year 6 have an after-school club for children aged 6 to 9 years, and open activities for children aged 10-12 years. Eskilstuna also has a number of independent comprehensive schools. In total, around 10,000 pupils attend Eskilstuna's comprehensive schools.

Eskilstuna has a municipal upper secondary school, with around 4,000 pupils at three units, Rekarnegymnasiet, Rinmangymnasiet and S:t Eskils gymnasium.

There are also five independent upper secondary schools: NTI-gymnasiet, Grillska gymnasiet, Mikael Elias teoretiska gymnasium, Realgymnasiet och Kunskapskompaniet. The municipal upper secondary school have around 4,000 pupils.

Families from various parts of the world are moving to Eskilstuna. The "Välkomsten" operation receives new arrivals to Sweden with children aged from 1 to 18 years. Here, the whole family can get information about nursery schools, comprehensive schools, upper secondary schools and society.

The Multi-Cultural Unit is responsible for ensuring that all children who speak a language other than Swedish at home can get support in their first language in nursery schools and teaching in it in comprehensive and upper secondary schools. An important requirement for participation is that the child is confident using the language and that the language is active and alive in the home.

For minority languages, teaching can also be given to children who do not speak the language at home every day. Also adoptive children, who for obvious reasons do not speak their first language at home, are entitled to support and teaching in their first language.

Education opportunities

Komvux carries out municipal adult education at basic and upper secondary level, teaching of Swedish for Immigrants (SfI), special teaching for adults (särvux) and vocational further education (YH).

Mälardalen University is one of Sweden's largest universities, with more than 13,000 students. The university has campuses in Eskilstuna and Västerås, and is characterised by a clear environmental profile and close collaboration with companies and the public sector.

Health and medical care

Eskilstuna has eight medical centres. All newborns and new arrivals are allocated to the medical centre nearest their homes. If you would prefer to attend another medical centre, you are entitled to choose which one you want to register at.

Mälarsjukhuset is the largest of the four hospitals in Sörmland county. The hospitals has more than 100,000 appointments every year, and nearly 3,000 persons work at the hospital.

Mälarsjukhuset is the neighbourhood hospital for the northern part of the county, but also holds joint clinics with Kullbergska hospital in Katrineholm and shares specialist competency that is used for patients throughout Sörmland and, in some cases, Västmanland county.

Interpreter assistance

With all contact with the authorities, the municipality and health services, you are entitled to interpreting help if you do not speak or understand Swedish. This is booked in advance of the actual meeting.

Public transport

With the expansion of the Svealand line at the end of the 1990s, the city gained a quicker connection to Stockholm. As the travel time is around one hour from Stockholm, Eskilstuna falls within the magic limit for daily commuting. Apart from better job opportunities, this also entails a wider housing market and better opportunities for recruitment of competency.

Work and entrepreneurship

Eskilstuna is a city with a strong industrial tradition. There is solid knowledge within manufacturing, primarily linked to heavy vehicle industry. Another area that is expanding strongly is logistics. Eskilstuna's excellent geographic location, in combination with well-developed infrastructure (roads, railway and air) and a combi-terminal that is expanding strongly, make us very attractive for freight companies, storage and service companies within logistics.

Eskilstuna is known for its good collaborative climate, which means that business, the public sector and education collaborate towards common goals. Eskilstuna is also known for its many business organisations and networks. There is a forum here for all who want one.
