Trosa municipality strives to be able to offer a broad range of different types of dwellings – large and small, in the countryside and in urban areas.

Rental accommodation

Trosabygdens Bostäder AB, TROBO, is a municipally-owned housing company. TROBO has around 400 flats in Trosa and Vagnhärad.

HSB Sörmlandsbostäder now owns around 400 flats in Trosa and Vagnhärad.

Fastighets AB Billy Gustafsson owns and manages a property portfolio of around 180 flats for rental situated both in Trosa and in Vagnhärad.

Language groups in the locality

In Trosa, we have residents who speak a variety of languages including Arabic, Dari, Tigrinya, English, Lithuanian, Russian, Bosnian and Finnish. There are many language groups but with only a small number of speakers within these groups.

What is available in the immediate area

Trosa municipality is a small municipality with a prosperous economy which is responsible for a large number of services. There are activities all the year round, hiking on Sörmlandsleden, visiting a castle, taking a tour of the archipelago or riding our little Blue Train. We even have our own ski slope!

There are two libraries in Trosa municipality: Trosa city library and the Navet library in Vagnhärad. Together they offer the residents of the municipality reading opportunities, information and cultural events.

There are two second-hand stores in Trosa selling cheap furniture and household appliances.

Childcare

All children are entitled to free general nursery schooling of 15 hours per week (a total of 525 hours per year) starting from the autumn term of the year in which they turn 3. This applies from the autumn term of the year in which your child turns 3 and continues until your child starts preschool or school proper.

General preschooling is not a special form of preschooling but is included in standard activities. General preschooling aims to provide all children aged 3 years and above with educational stimulus and group solidarity. The activities are free and follow school term dates.

As parents in Trosa municipality, you can choose between child care in the municipality or under personal management within the municipality or in another municipality. Personal management means that a preschool or after-school recreation centre is operated by someone other than the municipality, such as parents' cooperative or a company. The individually operated preschool or after-school recreation centre receives the same funding as municipal preschools and after-school recreation centres in order to be able to accept the municipality's children.

Preschools offer activities for children aged between 1 and 5 years old. There are 9 municipal and 2 individually operated preschools:

  • Trosa: Björkbacken, Tomtahill, Tomtalund, Tomtaklint, Tallbacken, Lagnö Barn
  • Vagnhärad: Hasselbacken, Fagerhult, Fageräng, Väsby
  • Västerljung: Björke, Dalbystugan

After-school recreation centres

An after-school recreation centre is provided for children from 6 years of age until the spring term of the year in which the child turns 13. All municipal after-school recreation centres are connected to one of the five comprehensive schools in the municipality. The independent preschool Lagnö Barn also has an after-school recreation centre.

Compulsory schools and upper secondary schools

School is a priority area in Trosa municipality and we work together to ensure that all children and young people enjoy a safe and productive time at school. As parents, you are free to choose the schools for your children. There are five municipal schools in Trosa municipality. You can also choose a school outside of the municipality.

Compulsory school

There is a preschool class (F) and after-school recreation centres at all of our comprehensive schools (with the exception of Tomtaklint School and Hedeby School):

  • Trosa: Skärlags School (F- year 6), Vitalis School (F – year 6), Tomtaklint School (years 7-9)
  • Vagnhärad: Fornby School (F – year 5), Hedeby School (years 6-9)
  • Västerljung: Kyrk School (F – year 6)

Upper secondary school

Trosa municipality has students attending at least 50 upper secondary schools in Sweden. As a student from Trosa municipality, you are entitled to apply for an upper secondary school education anywhere but as a municipality we have agreements with Nyköping, Södertälje, Rönninge (Salem municipality) where most national programmes can be followed.

Education opportunities

In Trosa we offer sfi teaching every morning of the week and we can offer levels B-D. If you are studying at level A you may travel to Nyköping or Södertälje for teaching. Trosa also offers grundvux teaching when pupils can continue their Swedish studies.

All sfi and grundvux teaching if offered in premises in Vagnhärad at Hedeby School.

Other adult education can be applied for via Campus Nyköping and there the pupils themselves can choose the teaching location.

Health and medical care

At Trosa welfare centre you can find doctors, district nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychotherapists and counsellors. We offer special care for patients with diabetes, asthma/chronic obstructive lung disease, heart failure and those who require rehabilitation within a multi-disciplinary collaboration. We also have a child welfare centre and a well-women clinic in the antenatal clinic.

There are dentists in Trosa who practise both privately and under the auspices of the national dental health service.

Interpreter assistance

If you require interpreting services within a school, local authorities or health care setting. this can be applied for. In most cases, this is offered over the telephone.

Public transport

Trosa municipality is easily accessible with the E4 European route and rail providing important communication links. Public transport is offered by train services stopping in Vagnhärad and both regional and local bus services. Vagnhärad's station area houses the municipality's travel centre and coordinates rail and bus travel.There are large parking areas for commuters within the station area in Vagnhärad.

The distance from Vagnhärad to Södertälje is a good three miles, to Stockholm seven miles and to Nyköping approximately four miles. At least 50% of the municipality's workers commute to workplaces outside the municipality's borders by train, bus or car.

Work and entrepreneurship

The two largest employers in Trosa municipality are the municipality itself and Camfil Farr. Many residents commute out of the municipality, especially to Södertälje where Scania, Astra and Södertälje General Hospital are major employers.
