Älvkarleby municipality, with 9000 inhabitants, is located close to the cities of Gävle (20 km) and Uppsala (80 km). The municipality is made up of Älvkarleby, Älvkarleö Bruk, Långsand, Gårdskär and Marma communities, and the central community of Skutskär.

Skutskär's centre has a good selection of services including banks and restaurants, supermarkets and pharmacies. There is a medical care centre in Skutskär with a doctor's surgery, district nurse, obstetric and paediatric consultation services. National dental health care services and the Apotek group (pharmacies) are also centrally located.

Public transport

Communications in and around Älvkarleby are good. The Upptåget train runs between Gävle in the north and Uppsala in the south, stopping at Skutskär, Älvkarleby and Marma. If you want to travel further, you can easily change to the Stockholm commuter train at Uppsala, reaching Arlanda in 80 minutes or Stockholm Central Station in about two hours. The municipality is home to major employers such as Stora Enso and Vattenfall, and there are also just over 400 small businesses in various industries.
