Housing

The biggest manager and provider of flats to rent in Lycksele is LYBO, Lycksele bostäder AB, a municipal housing company. LYBO owns and manages about 1340 flats to rent. If you want to get on its housing list, find more information about its flats or make appointments to visit flats that are available now, you can do so on LYBO's website.

There are a number of private property owners in Lycksele who rent out flats. Newly arrived refugees receive help from the Integration department in finding a flat.

Language groups in the locality

There are many different language groups in Lycksele, in part because the municipality has been receiving refugees for a very long time. Some of the biggest languages besides Swedish are English, Arabic, Tigrinya, Amharic, Oromo, Somali, Thai, Dari, Krio, Dinka, Lingala, French, Sami and Swahili.

Associations and organisations

Lycksele has a vibrant civil society, with about 245 associations. Each year, several of these organise major events, competitions and activities. There are a number of churches, religious communions and societies in Lycksele, including the Church of Sweden, the Pentecostal Church, the Mission Covenant Church, Jehovah's Witnesses, the Mother of Christ Catholic Congregation and Lycksele's Muslim Association. Lycksele has many shops and other types of services. These include a number of supermarkets and shops selling clothes, shoes, furniture and electronics, a shop specialised in products for immigrants, three second-hand shops, a pharmacy, hotels, restaurants, banks, a pastry shop and cafés.

Public services such as the Employment Service, the Social Insurance Agency, the Tax Agency, the social welfare office and the post office are represented in Lycksele. Other centrally located attractions include Lycksele animal park, the Ansia swimming pool, the library, indoor swimming pool, gym, recreation centre, bowling hall, cinema, education associations, driving schools etc.

Childcare

Lycksele currently provides childcare within four months, and we have recently opened new preschools. One of them is open evenings and weekends in order to cover the need for childcare at those times. The municipality also offers pedagogic care (family day nursery) and open preschool.

Compulsory schools and upper secondary schools

There are ten comprehensive schools in Lycksele, a special needs school and language classes. The upper secondary Tannbergsskolan offers a wide choice of programmes for adults as well as young people. In addition to 16 national programmes, it has skiing, hockey and football upper secondary programmes, special needs upper secondary school and adult education. In Lycksele we also have Second Chance school, which is a supplementary upper secondary programme.

Education opportunities

Municipal adult education in Lycksele has programmes for everyone, from secondary to post-secondary level, Sfi, vocational adult education and Second Chance school. Lycksele can also offer studies at university level, which Lycksele Learning centre organises in collaboration with several university programmes. On average, there are 50 full-time university students in Lycksele.

Health and medical care

Lycksele has a well-equipped emergency and accident hospital, and the region's ambulance helicopter is stationed here. Well-developed prehospital care and trained ambulance staff provide a sense of security. There are two health centres in Lycksele, one run by the region (Stenbergska) and one privately (Medicinkonsulten AB). Both provide access to doctors, district nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and midwives. Stenbergska also has a youth advice centre and the Public Dental Service (Folktandvården).

Public transport

Lycksele has a good transport network via road, air and rail. There are regular bus connections to different parts of the county and to other parts of Sweden. There is a train between Lycksele and Umeå. Daily flights between Lycksele and Stockholm Arlanda increase accessibility. The airport is about five km from central Lycksele, meaning that you can get to and from Stockholm Arlanda in about 85 minutes, seven days a week.

Lycksele has many businesses in relation to its size, with about 900 companies. If you want to start your own business, contact the municipality and ask for the business community developer. The biggest employers are Lycksele municipality, Region Västerbotten, Kristinebergsgruvan, Boliden Mineral, Hotell Lappland, ICA Supermarket, Coop, Hedlunda industrier and Texor. There are also large employers in the hospitality industry, both in the population centre and in rural areas.
