Flats are available to rent, both in the central town and in the outlying areas of the municipality. The municipality has its own housing company, Skebo, which has flats to rent in the larger population centres. You can, of course, also rent from private landlords. Childcare

Skellefteå municipality has nursery schools for children aged 1–5 years. Nursery school is the first step in Swedish education. Children can attend nursery school while their parents study or work. The municipality also has "open nursery schools", where parents and children together can meet and spend time together with other parents and children.

Folk high school

Skellefteå has three folk high schools, with different specialisations.

University

AtCampus Skellefteå there are two universities, Luleå University of Technology and Umeå University. Here you can also find The Scandinavian School for Stage Designers, the municipality's adult education (Vux), and qualified vocational education programmes.

Study a distance programme

Swedish for Immigrants (SfI)

If you as an adult want to learn the basics of the Swedish language, you can study Swedish for Immigrants (SfI). The municipality's adult education (Vux) is responsible for the course. There are others who also arrange courses in Swedish language, among them the folk high schools.

Health and medical care

Skellefteå hospital

Skellefteå hospital is a modern and well-equipped hospital with 1,300 staff. Examples of services offered are a women's clinic with obstetrics, X-ray, surgery, intensive care, psychiatry for adults, child and young person psychiatry, ophthalmology and ear, nose and throat.

The hospital also has an accident and emergency department. This is open 24 hours and day and every day of the year in case you become acutely ill or seriously injured.

If you become ill or have a less serious accident, you should in the first instance contact the medical centre you are registered with. There are six medical centres in Skellefteå.

Red Cross treatment centre

The Red Cross treatment centre in Skellefteå helps people who suffer from war wounds and injuries following torture. They work on reinforcing the self-image of patients, reducing the symptoms following traumatic stress and torture and improving the quality of life for those affected.

Interpreter assistance

If you cannot speak and understand Swedish, you can get an interpreter for your contacts with public authorities. An interpreter may be present on location, or by telephone.

Public transport

The distances between population centres in the municipality may be long, but the roads are good. You can often take the bus to where you are going or where you live. European road 4 passes through the municipality. Skellefteå has its own airport. It is located 15 km from the town. From the airport, there are daily flights to Stockholm. The flight takes one hour. From Skellefteå there are also flights to some other cities in Europe. You can also take the train when you want to travel. You can then depart from the towns of Jörn or Bastuträsk, which are some tens of kilometres from Skellefteå town. Buses to and from the train and the airport leave from the centre of Skellefteå.
