Vännäs is located in the middle of the region of Umeå which comprises 6 municipalities together, with Umeå as its natural centre. Vännäs is a commuter location which means we have very good communications to surrounding municipalities.

Housing
There are numerous housing options in Vännäs – right of tenancy, cooperative flats, existing private houses or new builds. If you are looking for private housing you can contact one of the property brokers in Västerbotten county. Vännäsbostäder, VÄBO, is a municipal housing company in Vännäs. It manages around 400 flats with the right of tenancy in Vännäs and surrounding neighbourhoods. In Vännäs municipality there are also a number of private landlords who rent out flats.
Language groups in the locality
Mother tongue teaching is currently provided in the following languages: Arabic, English, Finnish, Chinese, Meänkieli, Persian, Somalian, Spanish, South Sami, Thai, German and Ume Sami. Amongst adults who have moved here, other languages such as Tigrinya, Amharic and French are spoken.

Childcare
In Vännäs you and your child are offered good child care through a well-functioning network of preschools, after-school recreation centres and family day nurseries and a family centre with BVC, MVC, Open preschools and family advice. This is where you'll find preschools.
At open preschools you can be together with your child as you would be at home and allow the children to take part in teaching challenges available, together with preschool teachers.
Comprehensive and upper secondary schools
In Vännäs there are six municipal comprehensive schools and a private school. All F-6 pupils in the municipality enjoy after-school recreation centre activities. Lilja School, which is Vännäs' upper secondary school, is the second-largest upper secondary school in the whole of the Umeå region. Approximately 1,200 students study here, coming from across the entire region and even from different countries.
Education opportunities
Adult education including sfi is also offered at Lilja School. After sfi you can study Swedish or another language. Lilja School also has a number of other programmes, both vocational and theoretical. All pupils who study sfi have access to study and careers guidance. Strömbäcks Folk High School located 5 miles from Vännäs and Umeå University with its 36,000 students from all over the world, are located at a convenient distance in Umeå.

Health and medical care
In Vännäs is located the county council's welfare centre and the national dental health service. There are also some private dentists. For serious illness and specialist care you are directed to NUS, Norrland's University Hospital.

Public transport
Trains and buses between Umeå and Vännäs leave regularly with up to 30 journeys per day on weekdays. The train takes 25 minutes and the bus takes 35 minutes and more depending on the route. Many routes go via Umeå C to NUS, Norrland's University Hospital.
The distance to Umeå Airport is approximately 3.5 miles, there are currently three airlines serving the Umeå - Stockholm route. It takes less than an hour to fly to Stockholm. In addition to this there are also many overseas flights to many places in Europe.
