Göta Älv runs through Lilla Edet municipality, from north to south. Bountiful nature and Göta Älv offer plenty of possibilities for an active outdoor life all year round. Sweden's best salmon-fishing waters are here, as well as beautiful hiking trails. Lilla Edet is one of 13 municipalities in the Gothenburg region, meaning it is close to Gothenburg, Trollhättan and Uddevalla.

Housing

There are a number of private landlords and one municipal housing company that rent out accommodation in Lilla Edet municipality. The housing companies are responsible for information about vacant flats and for any housing lists. The municipality has no local housing authority.

Language groups in the locality

Language groups among our newly arrived inhabitants include Arabic, Persian, Thai and Somali. There are between 15 and 20 language groups within the municipality.

Associations and organisations

The municipality has a broad-ranging and active civil society for all ages. About 100 associations are registered.

What is available in the immediate area

The Municipal hall is in central Lilla Edet and has a social welfare office and a citizens' information service. The Employment Service and Social Insurance Agency also have offices in the Municipal hall. Next door to it are a pharmacy, a medical care centre and national dental health care services. The Eken Family Centre has an obstetrics and a paediatric centre, as well as open preschool services. Connected to these services are also a family pedagogue, social worker and psychologist. Additionally, the community has supermarkets, banks, second-hand shops, a systembolag (where alcohol is sold) and a multitude of pizzerias, cafés and restaurants.

The municipality has a labour market department that provides support to jobseekers and a refugee reception unit as well as courses in Swedish for immigrants (Sfi).

Lilla Edet offers a great variety of activities for all ages. Within the municipality are beautiful hiking trails, libraries, museums, a cinema, Folkets Hus (a labour movement community centre), churches, an Astroturf football pitch, an indoor ice skating rink, a riding school, a gym, indoor tennis courts, athletics facilities, salmon fishing in Göta Älv and much more. Childcare

Childcare is available in all parts of the municipality – Lilla Edet, Göta, Lödöse, Nygård, Prässebo, Hjärtum and Västerlanda. There are also privately-run alternatives in the municipality.

Compulsory schools and upper secondary schools

There are several comprehensive schools (for pupils between the ages of 6 and 15) in the municipality, one independent school and one upper secondary school. Many young people in the municipality study at upper secondary schools in other communities, particularly within the Gothenburg region.

Education opportunities

If you are new to Sweden and would like to learn Swedish, the municipality can offer Swedish for immigrants (Sfi) and help you to register for a civic information course. These courses are held in Gothenburg, in collaboration with Gothenburg city authorities.

Our Learning Centre offers adult education, which includes courses in Swedish as a second language at both basic and upper secondary levels.

Lilla Edet municipality also has a collaboration agreement for upper secondary occupational programmes within the Gothenburg region. Contact the municipality's study and vocation guidance counsellor for further information.

Health and medical care

Lilla Edet municipality has a medical care centre, national dental health care services, a family centre with obstetrics and paediatric centres, a youth clinic, elder care, outpatient psychiatric care and broad child and family support services.

Interpreter assistance

Lilla Edet does not have its own interpreter service for you to turn to, but you are entitled to an interpreter in your native language when going to scheduled appointments at the labour market department and social welfare office.

Public transport

With the expansion of the E45 motorway and the new double railway line, it is quick and easy to get to and from Lilla Edet by car, bus or train. There is an extensive bus network connecting all the population centres in the municipality (Lilla Edet, Göta, Lödöse, Nygård, Prässebo, Hjärtum and Västerlanda) with lines to and from Trollhättan, Kungälv and Stenungsund, as well as transfer buses to Lödöse Södra, where you can catch a train.

Work and entrepreneurship

There are currently about 1 000 businesses in the municipality. There is plenty of entrepreneurial spirit and growth among newly started companies is strong. Each year sees more companies establishing themselves in the municipality. Major companies present include SCA Hygiene Products AB, Storel, the Solhaga group and Electrolux. Both SCA and Storel have chosen to site their Nordic warehouses here due to the central location and excellent goods transport possibilities via the E45, the railway and Göta Älv. Public transport also makes it easy to reach employers in larger cities such as Gothenburg and Trollhättan.
