On Tjörn you'll find magnificent natural surroundings, an exciting cultural and association life, a varied economy which all taken together mean that many choose to live on "Tjörn – the island of opportunity". There are many exciting construction projects ongoing and the communication links make it easy to commute to and from Gothenburg.

Housing

The most common form of accommodation on the island are privately owned small houses, but there are also flats with right of tenancy and cooperative flats. 

Tjörns Bostads AB is the public accommodation company and the largest property owner in Tjörn municipality. The company is owned by the municipality. It has around 550 flats and eighty or so premises in all areas of the municipality. The flat's company provide everything from standard cooperative flats to terraced houses and with their own entrance and terrace.

Language groups in the locality

There are residents with the Nordic languages as their first language, other languages spoken include Spanish, Dari, Somali, Tigrinya, Arabic and Albanian.

What is available in the immediate area

Tjörn is a municipality that aims to keep the whole island alive. This means that there is no large centre, rather there are several small communities, the largest towns are Skärhamn, Rönnäng, Kållekärr, Höviksnäs and Myggenäs.

In Skärhamn, which is the largest town in Tjörn, you will find the central municipal house with Tjörns customer service centre. Go there to get help of various kinds and to find the right municipality's activities. You'll also find here the main library and tourist agency. In Skärhamn there are schools, banks, businesses, a welfare centre, chemists, hotels, dentist surgeries, restaurants, cultural and leisure centres for children and young people and the Nordic Watercolour Museum. In Rönnäng there are schools, food shops, hotels, restaurants and an ice rink. In Kållekärr there are food shops, businesses, a welfare centre, chemists, restaurants and a social welfare office. In Myggenäs there are food shops, businesses, restaurants, a welfare centre and chemists. In Höviksnäs/Häggvall there are cultural and leisure centres, libraries and schools.

The nearest job centre and regional social insurance office are located in Stenungsund.

Childcare

The municipality's childcare facilities include preschools, family day nurseries and care for school children (after-school recreation centres).

Compulsory schools and upper secondary schools

Tjörn has a good comprehensive school which occupies sixth place in the country in the ranking provided by the Swedish Union of Teachers and is therefore the best in West Sweden. There are eight comprehensive schools of which two are senior level schools.

The nearest upper secondary school is in Stenungssund.

Education opportunities

Sfi tuition is provided in Stenungsund and also adult education. The increased social orientation for those who have recently settled in Sweden is provided in collaboration with other municipalities and is based in Gothenburg.

On Tjörn there is the Billströmska Folk High School. There are the following courses; general courses (with or without an aesthetic choice from music, art or textiles), scientific foundation, music and young peoples' rights – a travelling course.

Health and medical care

It is the West Götaland region which is responsible for medical care.

In Tjörn there are welfare centres in Kållekärr, Skärhamn and Myggenäs. These locations also have childcare centres. The nearest hospital in Kungälv Hospital.

Public transport

The public transport in Tjörn includes buses and ferries. There are regular ferry services to some of the smaller islands such as Dyrön, Åstol and Härön. It is Västtrafik which is responsible for public transport

There are no trains on Tjörn. The nearest train station is situated in Stenungsund.

The nearest airport is Landvetter Airport. The airport bus stops at Gothenburg's central station, where you can change to a bus to Tjörn.

Work and entrepreneurship

Almost 1,000 people within Tjörn municipality, which makes the municipality one of the largest employers on the island.

The economy on Tjörn consists of small and medium-sized companies. There are just over 1,900 companies on Tjörn representing most industries, but the largest are merchant shipping, consultancy, tourism, retail, construction and agriculture/forestry/fishing. Most of the companies have fewer than 10 employees. On the municipality's company register it is easy to search for most companies.

Other large employers on Tjörn are Wallhamn AB, Tarbit Shipping AB, Per Jacobsson Byggnads AB and Seniorbolaget i Sverige AB.

The aim of the municipality is to create the best conditions for the positive development of the existing economy and for newly established companies. An obvious condition for attracting more companies to Tjörn are the good conditions for living and earning an income. There are well-developed services with functioning schools, preschools and good social care. The large variety of cultural and leisure activities provides a high quality of life. The proximity to Gothenburg and the beautiful and accessible countryside makes Tjörn an extremely attractive location in which to settle.
