In central Vänersborg there is a service office which houses the regional social insurance office, tax office and pension office. In the same building you'll also find the job centre. The municipal refugee unit can be found under Individ- och familjeomsorgen. In Vänersborg you'll find many large second-hand shops. In the centre there are food shops, a library, chemists, banks and restaurants, pizzerias and cafés.
Childcare
Vänersborg has 27 municipal preschools and 5 independent preschools. The comprehensive schools have after-school recreation centres. At the Sirius family centre there is also an open preschool.

Compulsory schools and upper secondary schools
Around 3,500 pupils attend the 17 comprehensive schools. There are also two independent schools: Frida School and Vänersnäs Montessori school. For pupils who are deaf or have impaired hearing, there is the state-run Väner School.
Birger Sjöberggymnasiet is part of Kunskapsförbundet Väst, which is responsible for upper secondary and adult education in Vänersborg and Trollhättan.

Health and medical care

Näl Hospital is situated in Trollhättan and lies 10 km from Vänersborg. It is 30 km to Uddevalla Hospiatl. The hospitals collaborate and are part of the NU hospital group.

Public transport
From Trollhättan-Vänersborgs you can fly direct to Bromma in Stockholm. Trunk roads 42 and 44 and European route 45 cross the municipality. It takes 50 minutes by train to Gothenburg. Bus and train timetables can be found at Västtrafik.
