If you are interested in adult education, you can choose from various courses and study programmes depending on what you want to study and what you have studied before. You can find information about different programmes and what support you are entitled to here.

Do you have a foreign educational qualification?
If you have a qualification awarded in another country and want to work in that field in Sweden, you may need to have your certificates translated or your foreign qualification assessed. If you do not have documentation of your previous studies, you can get help to assess your competence.
Municipal adult education if you did not attend primary, secondary or upper secondary school
Most jobs in Sweden require that you have attended primary and secondary or upper secondary school. If you are an adult who has not done so, you can study in municipal adult education (komvux). There you can study the same subjects as children in primary, secondary or upper secondary school. You can also study Swedish for Immigrants (SFI), supplement your previous education or attend vocational education and training.
Visit your municipality’s website or contact a study and career counsellor in your municipality to find out about the opportunities in your municipality.
Continue your studies at a university, university college or in higher vocational education
If you have completed upper secondary school and wish to continue your studies, you can go on to university, a university college or higher vocational education. This education is usually free.
You can choose to take one course or a complete study programme. There are different entry requirements for different courses and programmes. You can learn more about different courses and programmes, and their entry requirements, on the websites of the various schools.
At a folk high school, you can take courses or study for an occupation
Folk high schools offer various courses and programmes. You can study:
- the same subjects as children in primary, secondary or upper secondary school;
- courses on subjects that interest you, such as music and art; or
- vocational education and training, such as studying to be an assistant nurse.
Some schools also offer courses especially for those who have recently arrived in Sweden. All education at folk high schools is free.
At many folk high schools, you can live at the school while studying. You will then have to pay rent for a room.
You can contact a study and career counsellor
If you would like support when choosing a course or programme, you can contact a study and career counsellor in your municipality.
Get grants and loans from CSN while you study
Studying in Sweden is usually free. To support yourself while you study, you can apply for student finance in the form of grants or loans from the Swedish Board of Student Finance (CSN). The student finance you are eligible for depends on how old you are and the level at which you are studying.
CSN has produced a video about grants and loans for anyone interested in studying. The video is in Swedish with subtitles in multiple languages.
