Gymnasielagen (the Upper Secondary School Act)

Last updated: 22/1-2024

There used to be a temporary act that made it possible for children who had arrived in Sweden without their parents to be granted residence permits in order to study at the upper secondary school level (gymnasium). This temporary act ceased to apply on 20 July 2021.

It is no longer possible to be granted a residence permit for studies at the upper secondary school level.

If you already have a residence permit for studies at the upper secondary level, you can apply for an extension to your residence permit in order to apply for work after you have completed your studies.

If you got a job after having had a residence permit for studies at the upper secondary school level, you can apply for a permanent residence permit.

These rules are laid down in what is known as the "Gymnasielagen", or the Upper Secondary School Act.
