Gymnasielagen (the Upper Secondary School Act)
Last updated: 1/12-2022
There used to be a temporary act that made it possible for children who had arrived in Sweden without their parents to be granted residence permits in order to study at the upper secondary school level (gymnasium). This temporary act ceased to apply on 20 July 2021.
It is no longer possible to be granted a residence permit for studies at the upper secondary school level.
If you were granted a residence permit for studies at the upper secondary school level under the temporary act, you can apply for an extension of your residence permit if you need more time to complete your studies or if you want to apply for a job when you have completed your studies.
If you got a job after having had a residence permit for studies at the upper secondary school level, you can apply for a permanent residence permit.
These rules are laid down in what is known as the "Gymnasielagen", or the Upper Secondary School Act.
