As the capital region, Stockholm county is characterised by city life, but there is also plenty of countryside and natural surroundings. Around half of the area of the county consists of forest or farmland. There is also the Stockholm archipelago, one of the largest island worlds in the world, with 30,000 islands and skerries.
The population of Stockholm has been growing quickly over the last few years, and the housing shortage is a fact in all municipalities of the county. Housing construction has increased, but not sufficiently, which has meant that overcrowded housing is more common in Stockholm county than in any other region in Sweden. The housing shortage has resulted in rapid price increases for single-family houses and tenant-owner flats, and an increasing queue for rented flats from the countywide municipal housing agency.
