What do the different government agencies do?

There are many government agencies in Sweden. Below is information about some of the ones that you as a private individual may come into contact with.

What does the Migration Board do?
The Migration Board examines applications from persons who want to visit, move to or seeks shelter in Sweden, or who want to become Swedish citizens.

What does the Public Employment Service do?
Among Arbetsförmedlingen's responsibilities is making it easier for you to get a job in Sweden. They are also responsible for drawing up individual plans for some new arrivals to help them into work or studies. This is known as the introduction programme.

What does the Social Insurance Agency do?
Försäkringskassan is responsible for large parts of the Swedish social security system. Försäkringskassan is the agency that receives your applications for benefits. They determine whether you are entitled to benefits and pay you benefits and allowances you are entitled to.
There are many different benefits and allowances. Försäkringskassan's responsibilities include housing allowances, child benefits, introduction benefits and benefits when you are ill for more than 14 days.

What does the Tax Agency do?
The Tax Agency deals with your tax return and checks that you are paying the correct amount of tax. The Tax Agency also manages the national population register and issues ID cards.

What do the Police do?
The police investigate and combat crime. They also work to increase security and prevent new crimes.

What do the Social Services do?
All municipalities have what are known as social services or social services administration. Different municipalities can have slightly different arrangements. The social services operate under the Social Services Act, which lays down your rights to social security assistance, care and nursing. If you have financial problems and are unable to support yourself, you can apply for financial assistance. Check out your municipality's website to find out what applies.

What does the Transport Administration do?
It is the Transport Administration's task to ensure that roads are clear and usable, that trains run on time and that traffic information is up to date. It is also the authority that tests you when you apply for a driving licence.

What does the Swedish Transport Agency do?
The Swedish Transport Agency issues learners' permits to people who want to get a driving licence. It is also responsible for some aspects of road safety and the formulation of traffic regulations.
