Granted a residence permit

Last updated: 17/10-2023

If you are granted a residence permit, this means a “yes” to your asylum application and that you are allowed to stay in Sweden.

Different types of residence permits

If you receive a residence permit as a refugee, your permit will apply for three years.

If you receive a residence permit as a person eligible for subsidiary protection, your permit will apply for 13 months.

Population registration

When you have been granted a residence permit you have to get registered in the Swedish population register. This you do in one of the Tax Agency's offices. Your guardian has to accompany you to the Tax Agency to get you registered.

The population register contains information about who lives in Sweden and where they live. When you register in the population register you will also receive the last four digits of your personal identity number.

Your asylum case is concluded

A month after you have been granted a residence permit you will be removed from the Migration Agency's data system. You will no longer receive a daily allowance. Your bank card will be cancelled. It is important, therefore, that you withdraw any money you have on the card before you are removed from the Migration Agency's system.

Once you have been removed from the Migration Agency's data system your asylum case is concluded.

From now on the municipality has full responsibility for you, until you turn 18. For example, the municipality has to ensure that you have somewhere to live and that you can attend school.
